FAQs
1. What is physical therapy?
Physical therapy (PT) is a healthcare service designed to help individuals improve movement, manage pain, recover from injuries, and prevent future problems. A licensed physical therapist (PT) evaluates your physical condition and works with you to develop a personalized treatment plan using exercises, manual therapy, and other techniques.
2. Do I need a referral to see a physical therapist?
In California, you can access physical therapy services without a referral for up to 45 days or 12 visits, thanks to Direct Access laws. However, some insurance plans or certain medical conditions may still require a physician referral. It’s a good idea to check with your insurance provider to confirm their requirements.
3. How long will my physical therapy sessions last?
Typically, each session lasts about 30 to 60 minutes, depending on the type of treatment required. The length and frequency of your sessions will vary depending on your individual treatment plan and goals.
4. What should I expect during my first physical therapy visit?
During your first visit, your physical therapist will conduct an evaluation of your medical history, current physical condition, and specific symptoms. They will assess your posture, strength, range of motion, and other factors, then work with you to develop a treatment plan tailored to your needs. You may also begin your first treatment session during this visit.
5. What should I wear to my physical therapy appointment?
For your comfort, wear loose, comfortable clothing that allows easy movement, especially around the area being treated (e.g., shorts for knee or hip issues, a tank top for shoulder or upper body concerns). Athletic shoes are also recommended if you'll be performing exercises.
6. Will physical therapy hurt?
Physical therapy is not supposed to be painful, but you may experience some discomfort as your body adjusts to new movements or exercises. If you feel any pain during treatment, let your therapist know immediately so they can adjust the therapy as needed. Some soreness after a session is normal and usually fades after a day or two.
7. How many physical therapy sessions will I need?
The number of sessions you need will depend on your specific condition, goals, and response to treatment. Most patients attend PT for several weeks, with sessions 1-3 times a week. Your physical therapist will regularly reassess your progress and adjust your treatment plan accordingly.
8. How much will physical therapy cost?
The cost of physical therapy varies based on your insurance coverage, the type of services provided, and the number of sessions required. For patients with insurance, we will submit claims on your behalf. However, any co-pays, deductibles, or out-of-pocket expenses are your responsibility. If you don’t have insurance, we can discuss self-pay rates and payment plans.
9. Does insurance cover physical therapy?
We accept most major insurance providers, including Medicare, Medi-Cal, and private health plans. Your coverage for physical therapy services depends on your specific insurance plan. We recommend contacting your insurance company to confirm your benefits, co-pays, and any required referrals. If you are unsure, our office can assist you in verifying coverage.
10. What is your cancellation policy?
We ask that you give at least 24 hours' notice if you need to cancel or reschedule an appointment. Cancellations with less notice or missed appointments may incur a no-show fee. Repeated cancellations or no-shows may result in termination of treatment.
11. Can I continue physical therapy if I miss a session?
It's best to maintain consistent attendance to achieve the best results. If you miss a session, we recommend rescheduling as soon as possible. Your physical therapist may adjust your treatment plan based on how much time has passed since your last session.
12. Will my physical therapist communicate with my doctor?
Yes, with your permission, we will communicate with your referring physician or other healthcare providers involved in your care to ensure coordinated treatment. We can also provide progress reports and updates as necessary.
13. What happens if I experience pain or discomfort during physical therapy?
It’s important that you communicate with your physical therapist if you experience pain or discomfort during your sessions. They can modify your exercises or techniques to ensure your treatment is safe and effective. If pain continues or worsens, they may refer you back to your physician for further evaluation.
14. Can I receive physical therapy for injuries sustained at work or in an accident?
Yes, if your injury is work-related or a result of an accident, we can work with your workers' compensation or auto insurance to provide the necessary treatments. Please bring any relevant insurance information to your first visit.
15. How do I know if physical therapy is right for me?
If you are experiencing pain, discomfort, or mobility issues that affect your daily life, physical therapy may be an effective treatment option. Your doctor or healthcare provider can refer you, or you can schedule a consultation directly with our clinic to discuss your symptoms and determine if physical therapy is appropriate for you.
16. Is physical therapy covered under Medicare?
Yes, Medicare typically covers physical therapy for qualifying conditions. However, Medicare has specific requirements and coverage limits. We can help you understand your benefits and any out-of-pocket costs you may have.
